INTERVIEW JUNE 2021

We flew in from Kerala. Mumbai airport only asked for negative PCR Test result on arrival (June 7th). Same negative RTPCR result were used by us when flying back to Kerala (June 8th).
72 hour RTPCR results are valid.

Stayed @ Sofitel. 5 min walk to the embassy gate from Sofitel. Try to book ahead of time.

On June 8th, no one was allowed to be near the gate until 7:30 AM. Everyone was standing across the road etc. When they announced to form the line, we started running, and was able to be 3rd (wife) and 4th (myself) in line. They asked us to take the passport out and checked it. I told them, I’m with my wife to which they asked me if I’m a US citizen, and proceeded with checking my passport, and was allowed in. Once inside, we went through security checking. Please don’t bring any electronics or CD.

It’s rainy season now in Mumbai, so please carry an umbrella. Rickshaw drivers and street vendors will rip you off by asking for 3000 rupees for an umbrella. Umbrellas are allowed inside the consulate, and can be placed in a plastic bag. Also, make enough copies of your documents that you could potentially submit to the counselor. Also, bring change if you need to make copies within the consulate.

Once inside, proceed to counter 1. They will ask you if you need a translator @ counter 1. We said yes, Malayalam, to which they asked us to have a seat. 5 mins later, we were called to counter 2. Translator asked us for Passport, and Interview confirmation appt printout. Next, she requested PCC, birth certificate, and marriage certificate originals. Asked us for our marriage date, asked if this is our 1st marriage. Finished off by giving us a number pasted on the interview appt confirmation and told us to have a seat and wait. She held onto all the originals and passport.

We waited for around 30 - 40 mins or so.

Our name/number was eventually called to proceed to counter. I proceeded with my wife to the counter. American counselor along with the translator was present. Asked my wife who I am, to which she replied “husband”. I was told to have a seat. I took an empty seat right behind the counter where wife was getting interviewed.

Ps. Up until that point, I was able to accompany my wife.

INTERVIEW JUNE 2021

My interview was at 730, they let us in around 725.

They have standard airport type security screening on entry. Any kind of electronic devices are not allowed, not even CDs are allowed. I saw one girl was told to keep it in a locker outside as she was carrying marriage CD, not sure about the CD given at medical. Analog/ Mechanical watches are allowed. If you have 2-3 albums, I suggest taking a plastic carry bag or a transparent cover, but big purses are not allowed.

Once done with the security check, they showed us a way to enter a main building. I have noticed that they had two sets of windows. One set was for immigrant and other was for nonimmigrant visas.

Was given a token number upon entry and told us to wait. Indian officer asked me for original PCC, birth certificate and marriage certificate and passport for verification. I noticed that my documents were in green with my name on it. It also had my old and new interview dates on it.

Indian officer asked me for old passport coz I had a student visa in it. She wanted to verify entry and exit stamps. She did not ask me other questions but the interview language.

I was the first who was called for the final round by American officer as my interview language was English and the others ahead of me selected local language.

Questions asked by American officer:
1. Who is calling?
2. Love or arranged marriage?
3. Who arranged it?
4. How long you been married?
5. Did you stay more than one year in any country other than US?
6. And then he asked me other questions related my last stay in US – Location, university, course.
7. He also asked me about my employment & finance related history in US, I explained him.
And then he told me every thing is good and he kept typing something and said visa is approved!

I have noticed that before even I finish my answer he starts nodding and sometimes he used to finish my sentence before I am done. He was good at Hindi, he used to say okay okay in Hindi at the end after I answer the question!

I only uploaded my wife’s 2020 return a week before my interview. I was not asked about any other proofs or document. My interview lasts for about 5 minutes. I was the first guy who came out in IV category. I was out by 845.

  • C.O. explained the domestic violence rights and provided the green card fee paper and explained to her to pay before traveling to U.S. and then told her the visa was approved and handed paper with visa approved!!
They kept only her passport and returned all the original documents provided (i.e. PCC, birth cert, marriage cert).
She explained that given 24th and 25th was holiday that she should receive her visa next week. The CEAC website now shows “Administrative Processing” shortly after the interview.
Also, no idea if this helped or not, but I had emailed USTravelDocs after receiving IL to unlock DS-260 to update passport number (had to get new passport with spouse for PCC) and address change. At the same time, I uploaded new PCC, 2019 tax transcripts, 2019 W2, updated I-864 (with updated 2019 tax info), and last 3 months paystubs. She wasn’t asked for any addtl documents during interview.
We would like to thank every person that’s been part of the group for the experiences they’ve shared and the support and knowledge everyone has provided, especially for the admins who’ve kept the group going smoothly and keep everyone grounded. They deserve a lot of credit given they do this in their own free time and for everyone’s benefit. I have nothing but many many well wishes and prayers for all of them. This post was long, but wanted to return the favor of detailed experience. All the best for everyone with their interviews to come and everyone that is waiting!

    INTERVIEW DEC-2020

    Wife's Consulate Experience:

Interview scheduled for 7:45 AM, went into consulate around 7:55 AM. They sat her down for about 10 minutes and called her to first counter/window and asked for originals of interview letter, Stamped DS-260, passport, marriage certificate, birth certificate. For birth certificate it was not the same one that we uploaded to CEAC. My wife got a new one and had it laminated, dude asked if we had one submitted to CEAC, wife said my sister has it outside, I can go grab it. He decided not to ask her to run outside and just updated our files with new birth certificate. Asked her what language for interview and wife proudly said Gujarati (😤✊). They sat her down and she was one of the last people to be called up to the consular officer interview window (hence why it took her 4 hours to be done).

She listens to all the other interviews within earshot while she waits and window 10 in particular was flaming people all day long. Long interviews with detailed questions, telling people it's a sham marriage, etc. People with second marriage with prior divorce being hit the hardest.

They call her token and they ask the following:

-Who is calling you to the US? -Who is so and so on your birth certificate? (Probably asked bcoz they thought there was something fishy with birth certificate as mentioned above, they were talking about her mother). -Where is your husband currently? -How and when did he go to the US? -How many times after marriage did he visit you and how long did he stay each time? -Where did you guys honeymoon? (Asked for pictures after she answered and he continues asking the remaining questions while flipping through honeymoon pics) -What do your father and mother in law do? -What about your sister in law? -What about your brother in law? -What does your husband do? (Wife then asks if he wants to see financial information he says we know how much he makes and declines lol)

This was the last question and then wife said I have 3 more albums if you want to see them and he says nope, we did a good job with documentation and then gave her 3 letters; Visa approved letter, Immigration fee instructions, and a notice of conditional status.

She grabbed that stuff and they kept her PCC and passport and gave back the rest of the docs and she got the hell out of there quick fast and called me to give me the news.

Thanks again for everyone's support and help. Now just waiting game to see if we get passport with visa back in time before her flight leaves 😂

    INTERVIEW - OCT 2020

I stayed at Trident BKC, so it's just a 2-minute walk from there. Reached outside the consulate just after 8AM and waited from across the road.

Once the security personnel calls everyone waiting at around 8:15AM, we have to form a queue and get in one by one. The line outside the consulate has both immigrant visa candidates as well non-immigrant visa candidates. They will have to go different ways, however, after the security check that's done inside the consulate.

From being in the queue outside the consulate to taking a seat inside, it took around 5-10 minutes. There were around 10-15 IV candidates in all.

First Window: (5 minutes after having been seated)

The officer asked me to hand over my passport.

    1. Who is calling you?
    2. What language do I want to be interviewed? Gives me a token and my passport back. Asks me to wait.

    Second Window: (3-4 minutes later)

    1. The officer here asks for the passport, PCC, marriage certificate original (and copy), birth certificate original (and copy).
    2. Puts them all in a file.
    3. He shows me the USCIS Immigrant Fee document, telling that the interviewer will hand it over to me after the interview (which kinda made me feel like it was going to be okay and calmed my nerves).
    4. He also hands over a document giving information on the legal rights available to immigrant victims of domestic violence. Asks me to go through it and wait for my token to be called.

Third Window: Just over 10 minutes later

Greets first, I greet him back. Tells me to use the sanitizer.

Asks me to place my left hand on the fingerprint scanner. Since we don't remove mask at any time, perhaps this is to verify the correct person is here for the interview?

We are to lift the right hand and then pledge to say the truth.

    Then, he starts the questionnaire.

    1. Why are you applying for this visa? (Have to be honest, I was taken aback by this question. Just told him that my wife - the petitioner - and I want to live together as a family in the USA)
    2. What are you doing now? (Told him what I was working as)
    3. What is your wife's name?
    4. Describe her personality
    5. What are her interests/hobbies?
    6. Is this your first marriage?
    7. Is this your wife's first marriage?
    8. When did you first meet?
    9. When was the wedding ceremony?
    10. How many people were at the ceremony?
    11. How many of them were from the US?
    12. When I had mentioned a few of my wife's church members had come from the US, he asked if my wife was a Christian. Also asked if I was a Christian?
    13. What are the names of my wife's parents?
    14. Where are they living?
    15. Do you have photos? Point them out to me. (Had taken our wedding mini-album)
    16. Does your wife have siblings? Point the sibling out in the photo. Where does the sibling live?
    17. What is my wife doing?
    18. What is the age difference between the two of you? (We are of same age)

The interviewer was typing all through the interview. A small pause, and he opens my file and shows the "Visa is approved" slip and says that "your visa is issued". Tells me about paying the green card/immigrant fee, hands over the originals I had submitted at the second window and mentions that he will keep the passport and that it will be sent to the address I provided.

Walked back to my hotel room beaming ear-to-ear. Unfortunately or fortunately, no one could see that because I was wearing a mask. Reached my room at 9:22AM. So, everything from entering the consulate to getting out finished well within an hour.

    Interview - OCT 2020

Hi folks, I had my visa interview today and It got approved.

Stay tight as this will be a VERY long post.

I stayed at Trident which is just across the consulate. Its service is highly appreciated BUT food cost is ridiculously HIGH. If anyone is planning stay there then make sure you bring your own food. My food bill(Dinner and Breakfast) is higher than hotel room bill. Anyone wants to see menu then click on https://www.menumodo.com/app.php/viewer/previewMenu?id=64503

I reached consulate at 07:55 AM and security guys told me to wait across the road where other applicants were already waiting. He told us to queue in a line at 08:30AM. They let us in one person at a time for security screening.

Once I finished screening then I went to the window 1 where Indian lady officer took my appointment letter and asked me about the language of interview and gave me token. My token number was 205. Apparently there were 4 applicants ahead of me. Once she issues token then she told me to wait.

After around 10 minutes, Another Indian lady officer called me at window 5 and asked for original PCC, Birth certificate and Marriage certificate. She asked me,

    1. Who is calling you?
    2. Have I ever been to other country for more than 1 year?
    3. Have I ever been to US before?
    4. Where my wife currently is? (In India or US)

On other note, There were supervisor behind her who keeps monitoring her work. I believe they were checking how a lady officer works and what process she follows. So she kept explaining them about how she works and what applicant’s data she checks. I could see through the window that they are working with very less staff. Approx 50% desks were empty. This process took longer than others.

Around 09:50 AM, CO called my name and I went to window 8. I was the first applicant for the interview. I did not expect that. I believe, the applicants ahead of me had other language interview other than English.

He scanned my left four fingers and told me to raise my right hand for an oath.

    He asked me,

    • When I got married?
    • Whom my wife is living with?
    • When did she move to US?
    • Did she every come back after marriage and when?
    • Where is my wife working?
    • How many people have attended my traditional ceremony?
    • Has anyone came from US for traditional ceremony?
    • What is she doing for living?
    • Tell me something about her work.
    • My wife 2019’s income was lil bit lower than other years so he asked me about the reason.
    • He asked me if I have her tax documents which I had so I passed to him and he was looking for 2019 tax return and W2.

He was finding 2019 tax returns on portal which we have not uploaded. He then went somewhere to consult with his colleagues I believe. At this moment, my heart was at my mouth. He came back after couple of minutes and asked me that he is going to keep the original tax return and W2. They will scan and upload on his portal and they will send me those documents along with the passport.

And my visa has been APPROVED. He told mom about the domestic violence information and immigration fees. I was so relieved when he kept the passport and tax documents.

Before I left window, I thanked him and appreciated his work during this tough situation. He was cooperative.

    Interview Jan 2020

    Visa Approved!

We arrived around 6:30. We went to the wrong side of the building where apparently employees enter. So find the side with big Suntara building in the background. Everyone was sitting on the curb across the street from the consulate. Eventually a man on a megaphone asked everyone to form a line and people raced across the street to get in line.

They checked our passports and interview letter. We went to a small waiting area outside for approximately 30 seconds before they opened up the doors to the building. We proceeded through security and to a large outdoor waiting area where we waited approximately 30 seconds before a lady came and escorted the line to another section indoors. A large cream and orange colored room with 16 windows.

As we waited in line, people came to physically help everyone organize their documents. They asked petitioners to sit down. They gave the beneficiary a numbered ticket. After 5 minutes (we were one of the first in the number queue) they called my husband to the window. A young man with a black goatee and glasses. Questions:

    1. Date of birth
    2. Who is calling you
    3. Name
    4. He took the marriage certificate, birth certificate and passport.
    5. We waited for 20 minutes for the next window.

An old man took his interview. I accompanied my husband to the window. The man asked if I was Crystal, the petitioner. I said yes and he smiled and asked me to sit down.

    Questions:

    1. How did you meet?
    2. Date of marriage?
    3. What does your wife do (job)?
    4. Preschool teacher?? How many kids does she have in her class?
    5. Where have you guys traveled to together?
    6. How many days did you stay in Nepal?
    7. How many countries have you visited?
    8. Have you applied for a US visa?
    9. Oh you have a daughter together? How old is she?
    10. Who came to the wedding?
    11. How many people came to the wedding?
    12. Did anyone attend the wedding from the US?
    13. Are your parents happy?

In the end, my husband said he had the visa approved paper sitting nearby the whole time as if it was already decided.

He handed him the approval letter, told him what to expect and wished him luck!

    We were out around 8:30

    Interview Jan 2020

Interview time 7:30 am. We reached around 6:30 am. Waited for a bit and then asked the guards what&##39;s the process. They asked us to wait opposite the consulate until about 6:50.

Around that time there was an announcement calling all immigrant visa applicants to get in line.

They checked our passports and interview letter and then we went to a small sitting area outside the entrance of the building.

Very soon we were called inside and were taken through a scanner (similar to the security process at the airport) We were swiftly directed to the area where there were interview windows. As we waited in line (which were segregated as per the language selected) people came to physically help everyone organize their documents. They then pasted a printed token on the front of the documents.

After about 15 mins I was called to one of the windows (indication is when your token number flashes on the TV monitor). The official at the counter asked the following questions:

    15. What&##39;s your sister-in-law and her husband&##39;s name?
